The First International Ancient Greek Festival
Well, it has happened - did YOU miss it?
We had our Opening Ceremony, asking the blessing of the Ancient Greek Gods. A libation was poured by Carenza Lewis and the sun shone upon us!
Those who came to visit were delighted with the experience, as , indeed, were those who came from around the world to participate.
The British Museum welcomed our contributors and gave them a special, hands-on look at some of its Greek artefacts. Almost reason enough in itself for making the trip from Australia, as Athanasios Porporis said. And our guests from Greece, Russia, Sweden and America were equally impressed and grateful.
For the visitors to the Festival there were displays of arms and armour, costumes, tools and artefacts the like of which have not been seen in two and a half millenia. Greeks being drilled in Ancient Greek, talks by experts on fascinating aspects of Ancient Greek History, have-a-go archery and have-a-go warfare were all part of the entertainment, as well as dramas about the Battles of Marathon and Thermopylae and Ancient Olympic-style athletic events.
I would like to thank Watford Grammar School for Boys for hosting the event, Carenza Lewis for agreeing to open it and all the re-enactors who came, at their own expense, from so far away, to give their time, their expertise and their passion for the subject to our audiences. These are the Champions of Hellas, the Heroes of our Hellenic Heritage.
