Are butts butting into our world?
Most smokers believe cigarette butts are no problem...
1. They're so small! and...
2. They're biodegradeable
FACTS:
1. In 1998, 176 tons (176,000,000 lbs) of cigarette butts were found to be littered.
2. Butts are not biodegradable, in fact, they can take up to ten years to disintegrate
...do the math...that means in ten years 1.76 billion pounds of butts will accumulate before some will disintegrate
3. Someone who smokes a pack a day for one year produces enough butts that, lined up, would cover over two football fields
4. If everyone in the world smoked a pack a day and litters these butts, the litter, lined up, would wrap around the world 79 times in one day!!!!
5. In 2002, it was reported that 61 million Americans smoked cigarettes regularly. If these citizens smoked a pack a day, their litter alone would wrap around the world once in less than a day and a half!
Q. Where do the cigarette butts go?
A. Cigarette butts are carried to our water supply by rain and wind and the chemicals designed to trap toxins in the filter of cigarette are thus emptied into our water supply.
