A Love Story
After a serious auto accident, a young lady named Dinasia Kelly was brought to the local hospital in an ambulance. Her injuries included leg paralysis, blindness and a temporary facial scar (resulting in a 'lazy eye'). The word about her accident spread very quickly among her family, friends and the other members of the church she attended. She had received Christ in high school and was active in the singles' group and the children's ministry of her church. Everyone liked Dinasia because she was so friendly and always had a positive attitude about everything she had to face.
Carlos was a worker at the hospital where she was admitted. His job involved transporting patients from their rooms to their appointments in the hospital. When he heard about Dinasia's accident, he hung around after his regular work hours to see what would happen to her.
He met her in high school where they were involved in a Christian club to promote positive music among students. Since she was so popular, it was hard for Carlos to make the kind of impression with her to really let her know that he was attracted to her.
When he found out that she had been blinded in the accident, he toyed with the idea of pretending to be a doctor or medical technician to gain her interest. Later, he decided to just keep his identity to himself in his dealings with her. He felt that her high school
opinion of him was not that impressive, so he didn't want her to know who he really was.
She was scheduled to stay in the hospital 10 days and Carlos tried to arrange his transportation assignments so that he would be available to carry her to her appointments. During her first week, he was only able to carry her one way--to the appointments but not from the appointments.
Her doctors spent the first three days examining her eyes and the stitches between the right side of her nose and lower eyelid. Later in the week, they began physical therapy on her legs. When Carlos first tried to converse with her, she was silent; he could not get her to make any conversation with him.
He thought it was strange that she would not talk to him but when friends and old classmates came by to see her, she freely talked with them. He also found out that when other guys carried her back to her room, she talked 'her head off'. Benny, one of Carlos' co-workers, told Carlos that he was almost late for one of his other assignments because he couldn't walk away while she was still talking.
Then one day, Carlos was sent on an assignment to take someone to their room. To his surprise, it was Dinasia and she was very talkative. He found out why she hadn't been talking when he was with her before. She had decided to use the time before her appointments to silently deal with the fears of what the doctors might tell her. Since Carlos only carried her to her appointments for the first few days, he was only around her during her quiet times. Now she was talking and Carlos was silent.
Since he had decided to conceal his identity, he was not going to let her know his name. But since he was a Christian, he knew he could not lie to her. So he told her his name was Dwayne, which was actually his middle name. As the day of her departure approached, he took more opportunities to spend time with her having asked many questions about her life, things that he already knew for the most part.
Over the next few weeks, she made her appointments as an outpatient. And even though she didn't need any hospital workers to transport her from place to place, she always asked for Dwayne. Most of the time, it was before he was scheduled to be at work anyway, so he
came in early to spend time with her.
Then one day, Dwayne found out that the doctors working with Dinasia were going to try a procedure that might restore her eyesight. He tried to be happy about it when she told him but it really was not good news to him. To him, Dinasia's restored eyesight meant that
she would see who he really was. And with the indifferent attitude she showed toward him in high school, any future he might have with her would be ended.
Then, one night at the end of Bible study at his church, he was forced to face his attitude about her condition. Even though Dinasia was not a member of his church, one of the other members who knew her asked the group to pray that her coming operation would be successful.
Realizing that as a Christian his attitude about her illness was wrong, he asked GOD to change his heart so that he could sincerely pray for her total recovery; even if it meant he would lose the new relationship they were beginning to share.
The doctors scheduled the procedure and Dinasia was back in the hospital. The plan was to perform the procedure, observe her for two days and remove the bandages to see if the procedure worked. Carlos Dwayne took the week off and planned to call in sick for the days that she remained in the hospital. She asked for him every day and was told each time that he had the day off.
The operation was a success but when the bandages were removed, she still could not see. The doctors told her that sometimes, the effects were delayed by a few days and there might still be a chance that she would see again.
Having heard about the results of the operation and that Dinasia had been released from the hospital, Carlos came back to work. He felt he had honestly dealt with his attitude concerning the woman that he loved regaining her sight. He knew that it would have been wrong to desire for her to remain blind just so she wouldn't know who he was as he sought to win her affections. Since it was still possible for her to see again, he began accepting the fact that things would go back to normal between him and Dinasia.
One day, on the way to his car, someone behind him called his name 'Carlos' and when he turned around, it was Dinasia walking across the street toward him. Her sight had been restored, her walking almost normal again and she was practically grinning with delight at seeing him.
He spoke to her politely not daring to assume the personality that he had used with her over the past few months. But she hugged him and told him how she had been asking for him and calling the hospital from home and trying to catch up with him.
When he asked her if she was sure that she was talking to the right person, she told him that she found out from two of their former classmates (Meredith and Portia) who saw him pushing her wheelchair through the hospital that he was the 'Dwayne' that was with her everyday.
Then he began to apologize for taking advantage of her inability to see but she interrupted him to let him know that his presence, encouragement, kindness and caring were the reason she made it. She was able to face the fears about the condition of her eyes and legs as well as endure the pain of the therapy she had to undergo because he was there for her.
After talking together for over an hour, she gave Carlos her phone number and they went their separate ways. As they kept in touch with each other over the next few months, their relationship continued to grow until marriage was on the horizon. They both were thankful to GOD that the misfortune of her accident had brought about the blessed benefit of their reunion and subsequent engagement. (Rom. 8:28)
