What Is Lightning?
Lightning is a bright burst of light that is very complicated to make. There are different types of lightning too. If you are afraid of lightning look at the lightning safety section. There are also different causes and effects.
The Formation of Lightning
There are Many Steps
1. Charge Separation
The swirling Particles in the air are charged with static electricity.
2. Stepped Ladder
This is invisible. It comes down from the cumulonimbus cloud(thunder cloud)and creates a path for the Upward Streamer(next stage).
3. Upward Streamer
This shoots up from the ground like a rocket to meet the Stepped Ladder and go through it. This the electricity that you can see.
4. Return Stroke
It is the electricity that you can see when the Upward Streamer and the Stepped Ladder meet each other.
5. Dart Leader
This stage is also invisible. It travels down the middle of the Stepped Ladder.
6. Second Return Stroke
This stage of the lightning goes up the channel made by the Dart Leader. This happens less than a second after the First Return Stroke. You can also see this stage of the lightning.
You must remember that all of these stages happen in about a second.
Types of Lightning
Forked Lightning- many branches of lightning
Chain, Bead, or Rocket Lightning(all the same thing)- lightning that strikes somewhere then disappears in sections across the sky
Ball Lightning- very rare and is harmless but is like a fireball
Streak Lightning-A single branch of lightning
Ribbon Lightning-Lightning that happens when there is a storm with high winds
Lightning Safety
1. Get into some kind of shelter such as, a home, a building, or a car. Do not get into a convertable.
2. Stay away from the windows.
3. Never go swimming. There may be beautiful blue skies above your head but it is not safe to go into the water if you can hear thunder.
4. If you are on a sports team do not keep playing. Think about it. Would you rather be killed by lightning or play a sports game and/or get kicked off of your sports team.
5. If you are outside do the lightning crouch.(picture at www.azstarnet.com/~anubis/zaphome.com

How to Determine how far away Lightning is.
If you want to know how far away the lightning is from where you are do this. Wait for a crash of thunder and count until you can see lightning. Every five seconds you count is equal to a mile. So if you count to fifteen then the lightning is five miles away.
