Help Save Jeffy Dog!!
Hello and welcome to Jeffy's webpage!
This is the story of my dog Jeffy and his amazing story of survival.
Jeffy is a Pomeranian/American Eskimo mix. He turned two this past November.
Jeffy was originally born in Arizona. He came from a litter of puppies that was buried alive at birth- he was the sole survivor. He spent part of his life in a shelter until he was adopted. From Arizona, he moved to Illinois and was shuffled around to three different homes and was slated to go back to a shelter until I rescued him and brought him home.
Jeffy is the greatest dog that you could ever imagine! In spite of all the hardships he has endured, he has an incredible disposition and is very loving, VERY silly and would protect my seven year old son with his life.
On August 24th, Jeffy became very ill. He was extremely lethargic and could not hold down food or water. We went to an emergency vet center and we were told they didn't think it was anything serious, perhaps he just ate something that didn't agree with him and we were sent home.
After several followup visits with our regular vet and many days of waiting around and trying different solutions to see if his condition improved, he was taken back to the vet for x-rays. Then, it was discovered that Jeffy had swallowed some sort of foreign object. The vet said it looked to be in the lower part of his colon and it would probably "pass" in a few days. By this point, Jeffy had already been sick for two weeks and had virtually no appetite. I was force feeding him just to keep him alive. Incredibly, we got sent home again!
After three days, Jeffy's condition did not improve, in fact, it became worse. He was having bouts of trembling and he was starting to lose the use of his hind legs. Brought him back to the vet yet AGAIN to have the object removed. After doing some routine bloodwork to check for infection, it was discovered(quite by accident) that Jeffy has a rare adrenal gland disorder called "Addison's Disease". After nearly a week of hospitalization, Jeffy was finally able to come home!
Addison's Disease cannot be cured, however it can be treated with medication and frequent monitoring of his blood to check his levels of sodium and potassium. He is currently on two medications, one of which he will have to be on for the rest of his life. Unfortunately, that costs $1.60 per pill! He also needs to see the vet every 2 weeks for a blood draw to check his sodium and postassium levels. As he becomes stabilized,he won't need to go in as often(thank goodness)!I hope to be able to get him down to one vet visit a month, only time will tell!
Jeffy's prognosis so far is good. He's slowly on the mend, eating healthy has gained back the weight he lost(and then some) while he was in crisis. To look at him now, you can't even tell he's suffering from an incurable disease.
As if this poor dog hasn't endured enough in his short life, what makes it even more devasting is the fact that my husband has refused to help me any further financially towards the cost of Jeffy's treatment. I'm a stay-at-home mom who is currently looking for work, so right now we only have my husband's income. My husband is also insisting that I pay him back for everything he has spent so far on Jeffy. Ain't love grand? Right now I've got $17.00 in the bank and Jeffy is due back for a visit and is running low on his medication. To help with Jeffy's medical bills, I have started auctioning off some of my personal possessions on Ebay(seller name Genji2001). We are barely squeaking by.
I've created this webpage, (plus my homepage and a page on cyberbeg.com) asking for donations to help me save my dog. Will I actually take it that far? You betcha- it means that much to me, especially after seeing my son and Jeffy together. I love my dog, my son loves my dog and I will do whatever it takes to save him, even if that means humiliating myself on the internet.
If you are interested in helping, please contact me at Doodoodawn@aol.com or send donations directly to paypal.com using that same email address. It doesn't have to be much, whatever can be spared would be a great help! I'll even take free vet services! I live in the Wauconda,IL. area.
If you would like me to pay you back for what you send, I will gladly do so! Just include a notation with your donation stating so and I will keep your name & address on file plus the amount that was sent. It may take me a while to get back in the swing of things, but I promise you that you will not be forgotten! I'm currently working on another webpage that lists current updates on Jeffy's condition, plus an expense log so that those of you who send in donations can see how the money is being spent.Rest assured, this is not a scam.
I'm hoping to raise enough money to help cover the cost of his next few visits, medication and food(he is currently on a special diet). Also, I would like to have a little emergency fund set up just in case Jeffy falls into a crisis and needs to be hospitalized again. For Jeffy to crash, which is what is called an Addisonian episode, he will have to be hospitalized, put on an intravenous drip, several different types of blood panels drawn, medication and perhaps even dialysis should his kidney's start to fail. I'm still learning about this disease and from what I've found out so far, a crash is more than likely expected during the stabilization process. I'm hoping it doesn't happen!
Please, do not send any hate mail, my son and I have been through enough grief these past few months as it is. I know what I'm doing is unorthodox, but I'm between a rock and a hard place, trying to get back on my feet again and I don't know what else to do.
Thanks for reading Jeffy's story and God bless!
