THE HALLS OF VALOUR

THE OFFICIAL WEBSITE OF THE HACK, SLASH & NICK RPG GROUP - written by THE DARK AVENGER.

HS&N ROLE-PLAYERS:

5th February 2008

Introduction: This non-profit making site lists and profiles the role-players collectively known as Hack, Slash & Nick, past and present, based in Norfolk, England, for the interest of other gaming enthusiasts the world over. Games played are the original Dungeons & Dragons (main game, played continuously in the Mystara setting for the last 21 years), Call of Cthulhu, Pendragon, Vampire: The Masquerade, HackMaster and Aces & Eights. Boardgames have also been played now and again, such as Diplomacy, Risk, Doom and Kill Doctor Lucky.

The group that would very soon come to be known as Hack, Slash & Nick, began playing in 1987, although the earliest recorded date is given as 18th February 1988, thus its official birthday takes place on the first game session played during that month. The group started with a bastardised form of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, but due to an erratic DM (the almost legendary Greg whom the author has never met), Paul Veary (see below) purchased the red Basic Set of D&D rules and began anew with his brother Colin, Jeremy Dent, Clint Brown and Ian Ward.

CURRENT PLAYER PROFILES:

Christopher Johnson (Main Games/Dungeon Master): Chris first played in September 1988 in the Chasm-Bridge adventure in the company of those mentioned in the introduction. Paul Veary (who penned this adventure) was DM (see Past Players below). Chris took to DM'ing early on and for the first decade ran the game for approximately 50% of the time. He took overall control in 2000, but is happy to accommodate guest Games Masters. Chris enjoys the Fighter class (D&D). Main Character (when not not DMing a D&D session, which is almost unheard of these days): Sir Abaddon Tarkus (D&D Fighter).

Wayne Czyz: (Player and Guest GM): Wayne first played D&D in the Summer of 1992, in The Battle of Avien adventure (written by Chris). He has made a couple of guest appearances as Dungeon Master for D&D, having written two exciting adventures: the first, Caravan of Courage in 1996 and the second, The Unknown Realm in 2008. Wayne left the group not long after his induction (along with his brother Mark), but returned for the Legacy of Blood adventure (module CM9*) in the Winter of 1994. He likes playing Fighters, Mystics and Halflings (Hin). Main Character: Greater Master Hawk Sourowne (D&D Mystic).

David Eastwick (Player): David joined in the Winter of 1994/95 during the Legacy of Blood adventure (module CM9*), but left not long after due to game venue access problems. He returned in 1997 for a short period, then again on 13th March 2007 for Night's Dark Terror (module B10*). Unfortunately his work routine interupts game sessions on a regular basis. He loves playing Thief characters, but has a reputation of getting PCs killed off quickly which causes great amusement. Main Character: Gad (D&D Sidhe Rogue from PC1).

Luke Morrison (Player): Began play on 17th October 2006 for the Third Voyage to Dread adventure (written by Chris). He likes playing dwarves, magic users and mystics, and relishes a good scrap. Main Character: yet to be established.

Joe Morrison (Player and Guest GM): Joe commenced adventuring on 20th February 2007 for The Circus of Revenge adventure (penned by Chris). He'd thought about joining the group several years before - he should have done! Joe enjoys the limitless aspect and choice of the D&D game. He has no character preference, but really likes his druid, Woodley (D&D), who loves to eat sea bass. Main Character: yet to be established.

PART-TIME PLAYERS:

Craig Morrison (Player): A member of the Shannock Tribe (a native of Sheringham), and a keen role-player and games referee before his HS&N induction, Craig first played as a member of H,S&N in The Castle of Horrors adventure (written by Chris) on 23rd June 1999 and has been a regular player ever since, although sadly there have been lengthy sessions of forced absence. He is a major source when it comes to new rules and game ideas input (many rules have been added and altered over the years), and seems to enjoy playing Fighters and Dwarves (D&D) for the most part. Main Character: Drongi "The Unstoppable" Grubhelm (D&D Dwarf).

Jordan Morrison (Player): Jordan started play on 25th April 2006 during Horror on the Hill (module B5* or part of B1-9 In Search of Adventure). He is a funny, boisterous player and doesn't appear to have a preference concerning character classes. Main Character: yet to be established.

Bethony Higgins (Player): At last HS&N has a female participant again. Already an RPG player, and having a great sense of humour and fun, she fits in perfectly with the other members of the group. Bethony joined on 10th June 2010. Main Character: yet to be established.

* These modules, along with others, were out of print when purchased (a quest in itself). Chris now has every module in the Basic, Expert, Companion, Master, Immortal, DA and DDA series', plus the material published after the Mystara setting turned to A,D&D.

GUEST PLAYERS:

Thierry Navarro from Chalons-en-Champagne in France, first played on 12th February 2008. He had never played before, but thoroughly enjoyed himself. Thierry played again on 15th April 2008, while visiting England with his wife Nathalie. Steve Shivren, a friend of Beth's, played on 7th April 2011.

PAST PLAYERS:

After all this time (and a lack of early records) some of the information given below is a little sketchy at best and having been unable to gain everyone's permission, I hope, should they view this page, that any one individual will refrain from being insulted as I have no malice in mind regarding this site. On the contrary, I do this out of affection. So, to all the people mentioned, I give my heartfelt thanks, for you have provided much pleasure over the years. I also thank all those folk who worked hard creating every RPG. GDM denotes Guest Dungeon Master.

5th FEBRUARY 2008:

This date marked the official 20th Anniversary of H,S&N and for that reason there was much merry-making, reminiscing, eating and drinking on the night. It has also brought this website into being, thus allowing the group to share for the very first time, their role-playing sessions with anyone interested in what their characters get up to. Click on the GAME PART links below for full written accounts of the group's game sessions.

CURRENT ADVENTURE TITLE: CULT OF THE STOLEN MIND

NOTE: THE GROUP DOESN'T TAKE ITSELF TOO SERIOUSLY.

NEWS: My good friend and past D&D player Peter Mitchell, died on 11th April 2011. He will be greatly missed.

FAME: Hack, Slash & Nick were mentioned on the James Whale Radio Show (T.V.) in the 1990s after Paul Veary entered a competition. He won some Late Night Entertainment (condoms) for answering incorrectly (on purpose) "complete the title of this well known role-playing game: Dungeons &..." He put Dungeons & 'Nina Myskow!'

WEBSITE LAST UPDATED: 20th November 2011.

CODA: If you have any comments to make or want to say something about your own games, please use the guestbook. Thanks for looking in. All the best - The Dark Avenger.
