NETSCAPE BROWSER HELP AND HINTS

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Adding and Saving A Bookmark

During your Internet Life, you will surf many millions of pages, and find some that will interest you to such an extent that you will want to revisit them. Netscape has incorporated a number of tools in their program so that you can automatically access the sites, by using what we call Bookmarks.

SAVING IMAGES WITH NETSCAPE

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Like Home Pages, there will be times when you fancy a photo you see or maybe you would like to incorporate the photo in an assignment. We will now investigate te steps for saving graphics on the Internet, to a file on our hard drive. Let's begin by going to Keiths Nursery. His site has a beautiful orchard that we want to save.

Home Page Location: http://www.ultra.net.au/~keithsnursery/

Place the arrow or pointer on top of the Graphic and press your right button on the mouse

This little dialogue box will appear, click once on Save Image As and a dialogue box will appear that is same as the box for save the Home Page.

In our example we will save this photo as bcsarah.jpg. Once this file is saved you can view or insert it, in word documents etc.

DISABLING AUTO IMAGE LOAD
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As you may have noticed so far during your internet career, often Home pages that are heavy with graphics, will take some time to load. This period of time is effectively costing you money. There is a method that will allow you home pages to load without graphics and load alot faster.

In the Options part of the Netscape Toolbar, there is a part that says Auto Load Images. All Netscape software that is supplied by Internet Service Providers will be enabled to Automatically Load the Images. You, can disable this function by just clicking on the Auto Load Images line.

If the Auto Load Images Function is enabled there will be a tick next to the text.

DOWNLOADING FILES
with the Netscape Navigator

Downloading files is probably one of the most useful facilities the Internet has to offer. It allows people to store all manner of programs and applications onto their own computer. This tutorial will (hopefully) explain the basics of file download.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The first step in Downloading is to click on the link that will download the file. It may well look like this.

Eudora Lite Email

Once you click on the link, you will be prompted for where you wish to save the file.

Choose a directory that will NOT interfere with your other programs. One called tmp or temp is always a good idea. DESKTOP is NOT a good idea, however.

Once you have double clicked on the appropriate directory, click on the SAVE button to download the file. From this point on comes the tricky part.

If the file ends in .exe then the file is executable (ie. you can run it). To do this, use RUN from the START menu if using Windows 95, or if using Windows 3.11, select RUN from the FILE menu of the Program Manager.

This will do one of two things. Either it will run a program which you can then use, or else it will Un-archive a group of programs into the directory that the file was in. (A rule of thumb... If nothing interesting happens, then it has probably un-archived some files.) In the case where it unarcs some files, there are numerous options, all of which entail running another program. If there is a setup.exe (or setup) file in the directory, run this file to install your program, similarly, if there is an install.exe (or install) file the directory, running this will setup the program. If neither of these programs exist, then it is quite possible that the program has been extracted by your first RUN command, in which case, you will have to simply RUN the program, for example Eudora.exe.

If the file ends in something other than .exe, then it is probably an archive, and you will have to extract it using something like the Stuffit Expander. To use the Stuffit Expander, simply run it and "Drag and Drop" your archived files into the Stuffit window, and it will unarc them for you. Once you have extracted the file, you will simply RUN the application.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is the basics of how to download and run files from the Internet. If it seems confusing, you are probably right. Tutorials covering the information deal with in these help pages are run once a fortnight at the Thuringowa Library for only $20. Contact the Library for details.

Like Bookmarks in a book, you only need to go to where the bookmark is to find the page that you wish to visit. We will show you step by step procedure on adding bookmarks and recalling bookmarks.

We now want to save this homepage as a bookmark so that we can return to it in the near future. Click on Bookmark on the toolbar and click on Add Bookmark.
