LAST DAYS OF THE SCHOOL YEAR...

HAVE A GREAT SUMMER!

------------------------------------------------------------------

I update webgrader weekly, on Monday's but usually not until the evening. I use the time over the weekend to correct absentee assignments, corrections, extra credit and late assignments. Tests and quizzes are corrected immediately and recorded in my grade book (not webgrader-until the following Monday), then returned to the students the next day (if no students in the grade level were absent for the test or quiz). A student who has 2 incomplete assignments or 2 assignments that need to be corrected (of which I have not received a score) will result in 1 missing assignment demerit. This also includes the combination of 1 incomplete assignment and 1 assignment in need of being corrected (of which I have not received a score).

Students may make corrections on assignments that have been handed in on the due date if the base score (before extra credit is added) is 77% or lower. All corrections and extra credit for the current chapter are due at the latest, at class time of that Chapter's Test Day.

If a student(s) are found cheating on a test, quiz or an assignment, a score of 0 will be recorded for the assignment/test/quiz.
Cheating is defined as copying another student's answer(s) and/or permitting another student to copy answers from one's assignment/quiz/test.

In Middle School Math...

Grades are calculated by:
Assignments..............40%
Quizzes.....................20%
Tests/project.............20%
Notebook.................10%
Assessment...............10%

If a Required Project is assigned during a quarter which incorporates more than concepts from any one single chapter, then the "weighting" of categories will change as follows:
Project.................10%
assignments.............30%
Quizzes.................20%
tests-chapter project...20%
Notebook................10%
Assessment..............10%

Extra credit is part of the Assignment category.
It works into the assignment as follows:
If a student does extra credit within the assignment (the problem numbers not assigned to the class) it is 1 percentage point for each correct answer into the assignment score. For example, if there were 20 problems in an assignment and a student has 2 wrong, their score would be a 90%. If the student did 10 extra credit problems and had 8 correct, the final score would be 98% for that assignment.
When a student does extra credit like review pages, chapter tests (from the text), chapter reviews, etc., this goes into the assignment average as follows: If there were 30 assignments during a quarter that is a total of 3000 points. If a student's percentages adds up to 2350 points then the student's average is 2350/3000 = 78%, (this means the final assignment average x 0.4 = 0.312) but if a student has additional extra credit (the chapter tests, reviews, etc) then the student's percentage points from assignments increases. For example, if a student has completed a total of 250 additional extra credit points then the student's total earned percentages would be 2350+250= 2600. Now the student's assignment average is 2600/3000=87%. This means the final assignment average x 40% = 0.348.
Extra credit is limited to a maximum of 100 points per chapter.

Students are encouraged to have quizzes signed for an additional 3 points onto the quiz score. It is not required as part of the STRIDE program unless a teacher requires it. I do not require it.
Tests need to be signed. It is part of the middle school STRIDE program.

Notebooks are checked once a quarter during the last week of the quarter. Students receive a grade that is posted inside their notebook for the grade earned.

Assessments are done weekly and vary upon the day. The assessments are from observations from the teacher, in class discussions, board work, and in class work.

Proficiency standards are calculated from quizzes, tests, projects, notebooks and weekly assessments. Quizzes, tests, projects, notebooks and assessments are designed to assess the standards as directed by the Archdiocese. An important part of learning is understanding and demonstrating knowledge of the concepts of the daily lessons. Assignments are not part of the proficiency standards. Students are encouraged to ask questions, seek help from the teacher, and make corrections on low scores from daily assignments. All incomplete, absentee and corrected assignments are due before the start of the test. (If a student has been absent for the test, late and corrected assignments are due the day the student returns to class. An extended absence only allows for extra days to complete absentee assignments - not late or corrected assignments.) Often we learn from mistakes to better understand important concepts so that they are not missed in quizzes, tests and projects. Assignments, notebook and weekly assessments are designed to help develop the skills needed to be successful in quizzes, tests and projects. Quizzes are designed to review student's ability on a few lesson concepts. They take about 10-20 minutes to complete and examine the student's knowledge, understanding and comprehension of a cluster of related lessons. Tests are completed during a full-length class period. They are designed to analyze the student's ability in various related concepts, demonstrate knowledge, understanding and comprehension. Projects are also assigned as an alternative to a test (at various opportunities) to offer the student an alternative method to demonstrate his/hers comprehension of various related concepts, comprehension and knowledge. If a student opts to take the chapter test and complete the project (when offered) he or she may earn up to 10 extra points (based on the final score of the test/project) and then added to the higher of the 2 scores. For example: if a student earns an 88% on a test and 91% on the project the final score would be 91 + 8.8 = 99.8%. Projects are completed "outside" of school and due the day of the test.

Standards: (indicated on the report card: quizzes, tests and projects are reflected in the standards; not assignments, although assignments are reflected in the overall letter grade.) When Unit Projects are assigned in a quarter, the assignment average is weighted at 30% and the project is 10% of the overall grade. A Unit Project incorporates numerous concepts from various chapters.

Placement testing at the end of sixth and seventh grade (when initiated):

We realize that students learn in different ways and that math may pose positive and negative challenges. Students need to be taken from where they are at and brought to the next level. In the 7th and 8th grade we use ability grouping for our math students. The groupings for each child are based on their previous semesters' math grades, a standardized test the students take during the last week of school, and teachers' recommendation. We carefully consider the three standards for placing a student by ability.
