OUR PURPOSE:
*To give immediate information to
parents and students by posting our instructors' e-mail addresses.
*To give general information concerning driver education.
NEW CHANGES TO TEEN DRIVING LAWS:
*Effective June 22, 2006, PA 94-0897 strengthens the Illinois Graduated Driver's License program by increasing the amount of practice time to 50 hours, including 10 hours of night driving, young drivers will need before being able to obtain a driver's license. This new law requires the parent, legal guardian or other responsible adult to provide written consent at the time of driver's license application verifying the teen is sufficiently prepared and able to safely operate a motor vehicle.
*Effective January 1, 2006, PA 94-0241 Each driver under the age of 18 years and each of the driver's passengers under the age of 19 years (changed from 18) shall wear a safety belt.
*Effective July 15, 2005, A person who holds an instruction permit or a graduated license (under age 18) may not use a wireless phone while driving a vehicle. Provides that the prohibition does not apply to use of a wireless phone to contact a law enforcement agency, health care provider, or emergency services agency for emergency purpose.
*Effective July 1, 2007, An unmarried person under 18 years of age may have their driver's license cancelled or the Secretary of State's office may refuse to issue a driver's license or permit to an individual who fails to maintain school attendance.
*For the first six months of licensing, or until the driver is age 18, whichever occurs first, the number of passengers is limited to one person under age 20, unless the additional passenger(s) is a sibling, step-sibling, child or step-child of the driver. After this period, the number of passengers is limited to one in the front seat and the number of safety belts in the back seat
GENERAL INFORMATION:
Student's will NOT be scheduled for behind-the-wheel driving until they pay their $50 fee. The fee is payable to Lanphier High School.
* The students will be required to pay two fee's: 1) $20 fee payable to the Secretary of State. The fee is for the students Permit and the first 5 years of their Driver's License. (All student's must pay this fee) 2) $50 fee payable to Lanphier High School. This fee is for the Behind-the-Wheel phase. Students that receive free/reduced lunch and/or breakfast qualifys for a waiver. This waiver allows them to waive the $50 fee.
* In addition to Behind the Wheel, driving students are required to have an additional 50 hours of driving with 10 of the driving hours after dusk. The person they are to drive with must be at least 21 years of age and have had their license for at least 1 year. Anyone driving with the student besides the licensed, legal guardian must be given permission by that student's guardian.
* The earliest a student can receive his/her drivers license is 3 months or 91 days after the permit has been issued.
* Blue slips take about 1 week to come in after the last day of behind the wheel driving.
* Students will be scheduled for Behind the Wheel by birthdate. (oldest to the youngest)
BEHIND THE WHEEL PHASE:
Students become eligible for the behind-the-wheel phase upon completion of the classroom phase. B.T.W. instruction is limited to students 15 1/2 years of age or those who will be 15 1/2 years of age before completion of the program.
LESSONS TAUGHT DURING THE BEHIND-THE-WHEEL PHASE:
* Pre-evaluation, pre-driving habits
* Backing
* Lane changes
* Turns
* Residential
* Turnabouts
* Curves
* Railroad crossings
* Interstate
* State and county highways
* Parking (uphill, downhill, etc...)
* Route planning
* Practice maneuvers
* Review and road test
AUTOMATIC BEHIND-THE-WHEEL DAILY FAILURE:
Student's will be given a letter grade during each session of behind-the-wheel. There are certain behind-the-wheel actions that would result in an automatic FAILURE for that individual session. They are as follows:
*Turn on the Wrong Side of the road
*Crosses the Center of the road
*Dangerous Action (Teacher has to react)
*Ran Stop Light or Stop Sign
*Failure to Check Blind-spot
After the completion of the final behind-the-wheel sessions, the student's individual grades will be averaged together to determine their final behind-the-wheel grade.
COMMON BEHIND-THE-WHEEL MISTAKES:
Parents These are common mistakes students make in B.T. W.. Working tegether, we can make your child a better and safer driver.
*Turning Right on Red----- Look left, oncoming center turn lane, and then back left before turning.
*When you change lanes make sure you check your blind-spot.
*When stopping at an intersection, leave at least one car length between you and the car in front of you.
*When making a left at a green light with no turn arrow, stop half way in the intersection and wait for oncoming traffic to be clear.
*When approaching a 4-way stop sign , stop then move forward and look both ways, then proceed if it is clear.
*When approaching a T-intersection, the car that can not go straight must stop and look both ways before proceeding.
*Recognize merge signs. Signal early and check your blind-spot before merging.
*When changing lanes, try and maintain the posted speed limit.
*You can turn left on red if you are turning from a one-way onto a one-way.
*You do not need to stop for a school bus if you are traveling in the opposite direction of the bus on a roadway with four or more lanes.
AFTER THE COMPLETION OF THE BEHIND THE WHEEL DRIVING:
STEP #1-go to the links at the botton of the page and click on the (Blue Slip) link and see if you are approved. If it says you are not approved, the paper work has not been processed and you will have to check back later. (When you put in your permit number, list numbers ONLY, no dashes)
STEP #2- once you have been approved, take the following forms of identification to you to the Secretary of State's Driving Examination Station:
* Permit
* County Birth Certificate
* Social Security Card
* 25 Hour Sheet
* Cooperative Testing Form (If your instructor DOESN'T give you a cooperative testing form before you go to get your license, YOU MUST take the drving test at the exam station.) NOTE: If you don't receive the cooperative testing form from your instructor, you don't qualify. You will have to take the driving test with an instructor at the Secretary of State's Driving Examination Station.
CLASSROOM PHASE:
Driver education is offered to all district sophomore students, including those who attend public, private or parochial schools.
The following is information taught in the Classroom Phase of Driver Education:
* PreTest- given to evaluate the student's background knowledge in Driver Education.
* Roadway Signs- information can be found at the "Rules of the Road" link at the bottom of the page. (Ch. 7)
* Traffic Signals and Pavement Markings- "Rules of the Road" link. (Ch. 8)
* Permit Test- "Rules of the Road" link all chapters.
* The Highway Transportation System- introduces a System for Driving, The Driving Task and Driving Responsibilities.
* The S.I.P.D.E. process- provides the student with information on how to Search, Identify, Predict, Decide and Execute a hazardous driving situation.
* Interacting with Traffic- introduces Basic Car Maneuvers, Intersections, Natural Laws and Car Control.
* Driving in Different Environments and Conditions- including: Cities, Highway, Expressway and Adverse Conditions.
* Driver Responsibility- Alcohol, Drugs and Driving, Car Insurance and Maintenance.
* PostTest- given to evaluate the knowledge acquired during the Driver Education classroom phase.
