- The Diagnosis and Differential Diagnosis of the disease, its aetiology, treatment, drugs that are used in treating, along with the physical and psychological damage caused by H.D.. Through chapter 10 of our book, we share with you our experiences during a period when there were no adequate facilities for treating leprosy sufferers and it shows just how victims of this disease can suffer when their condition is not diagnosed in time and when proper Multi-Drug-Therapy (MDT) is not available. Happily, if the disease is diagnosed in the earliest stages, before there is serious nerve damage, no suffering whatsoever is experienced by those who contract the disease. WHAT IS "LEPROSY" ? - Those who are approaching the subject of Leprosy for the first time, need to realize that it is a disease (Hansen's Disease or H.D.) like any other disease. It is not some ancient, mythological condition, confined to Biblical times and thought to be a "Curse of the Gods". WORLD HEALTH ORGANISATIONS UP-DATE ON ITS "ELIMINATION OF LEPROSY" PROGRAMME -- Please note that this does not mean that, by the end of the 20th. century, Hansen's Disease (leprosy) will be completely removed from the face of the earth. Fow quite some time - well into the 21st. century - leprosy will still be around. The W.H.O. uses the word "ELIMINATION" in referring to leprosy as a "Public Health Problem" . WHO states that, once the prevalent rate of the disease falls below one case per 10,000 population, leprosy will no longer be a Public Health PROBLEM. The disease will still be around and not until the last trace of the bacillus M.leprae has been destroyed, will W.H.O. proclain that the disease has been "ERADICATED" . It is important, therefore, that all medical personnel serving in public health clinics be adequately equipped to properly diagnose a case of H.D. in the early and advanced stages and be able to differentially diagnose it.
