Most cases of leprosy (Hansen's Disease), which nowadays, in Australia, are very few, are presenting in Western Australia and Australia's Northern Territory, the State Capital of which is Darwin. For this reason, The Darwin Government Hospital's Leprosy Department is about the best site for any information on leprosy in Australia. There was a time when about 2,000 cases of leprosy were registered in Australia but, presently, there are no more than approx. sixty and the disease is not a public health problem. If the Darwin site is unavailable, I suggest that you access the W.H.O. by CLICKING HERE and then going to the left of the page to Index Item Nos. 3, 4, and 5 - " The Global Situation", "The Most Endemic Countries" and "Leprosy Trends in the most endemic countries". Of course, Australia is no longer an endemic (for leprosy) country. If you are interested in knowing the exact figure to date, of the number of leprosy cases we have in Australia, the best person to contact is the Director of THE LEPROSY MISSION (Aust.) , based in Melbourne, who constantly has access to the latest Goverment statistics on leprosy. We have people e-mailing us to enquire if it is safe to travel in those areas of Northern Australia where occasionally it may be possible to see a person affected by leprosy (H.D.). Personally, I am more afraid of meeting a crocodile (but there is not much of a chance of that, so don't put off visiting us) than one with Hansen's Disease. And, anyway, of all the communicable diseases, H.D. is the least infectious and, if you don't believe me, check it out under "D" for Diseases, in the "Guiness Book of World Records". Most cases of leprosy (Paucibacilliary) are non-infectious and most people of the human race have a good natural immunity (cell-mediated-immunity)
