Various religious factions, such as the RASHTRIYA SWAYAMSEVAK SANGH (RSS) and other radical groups, in the name of Hinduism and in total denial of the liberal Indian Constitution, are fostering a form of "ethnic cleansing", such as we have witnessed in Bosnia and Kosovo; this is very frightening, not only for those who embrace the Christian faith but also MUSLIMS, Sikhs, Buddhists, Parsis, etc., but, more particularly, the Animist or "tribal" sections of society (e.g. Uraon, Munda, Santhal etc.) some of whom are being forcibly "re-converted" to Hinduism, when in fact, many of them, in the past and present, have had no relationship, whatsoever, with Hinduism. Mahatma Gandhi gave his life to encourage conservative Hindus to accept the "Untouchables" and Adivasis into their society and even named them "Harijans", but to no avail because some, to this day, are not fully welcomed into certain temples and never allowed to inter-marry with Brahmans and other "high" caste Hindus. It should be understood that ALL religions (including "Christianity" ) may be tainted by fundamentalism, which is the real issue. When we study Comparative Religion, we discover a basic oneness - a point of similarity - which India must recapture, if it is to survive as a truly dynamic "Secular" state. When we strip away all the "religious" trimmings,trappings and superstitions from the Great Faiths, we find that there is far more in common than at variance. Christian Missionaries are being accused of targeting the poor, the illiterate, the Adivasis (Aboriginals),those with leprosy / and other "outcastes", the gullible and "underdogs" of society. Do the RSS and other Hindu Fundamentalists know what one of India's Saints has said concerning religious belief? -- "The Poor, the Illiterate, the Ignorant - let them be your God. To serve these alone is the Highest Religion" (Quote - SWAMI VIVEKANANDA). Let us capture that Oneness of a Common Faith and so preserve the multicultural "Secular" nature of the Great Nation for which Mahatma Gandhi and others died. Forced "conversions", by any religious faction, including the RSS, is PERSECUTION AND A VIOLATION OF THE CONSTITUTION OF INDIA and cannot be tolerated in a free, democratic world, especially one, such as India, which, since the days of the Great Mahatma, has known and enjoyed the privilege of being a member among the world's "Secular" society of nations. Other great pioneers of Indian Independence, such as Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, have also stressed the view that, if multicultural India is to survive, it must be "Secular", while allowing all separate, cultural and religious sections freedom to practice their respective faiths, in a tolerant manner. To prevent further such tragedies, there needs to be a speedy but thorough, Judicial Inquiry into the brutal burning to death of Graham Staines and his two small sons. Graham, like Mother Theresa and others, was involved in caring for leprosy sufferers, and did not deserve to die in such a cruel manner. He was not a "proselytiser"; he was a loving carer of desperately needy people. You are invited to share in Discussion and, to assist you, a number of Indian Search machines have been made available. One good thing that is coming out of these discussions is that "evangelism", "spreading the Word", "preaching", "witnessing" or, whatever you may call it, basically, has nothing to do with mere words. In fact, it often does more harm than good, in certain situations, to "talk religion". True Christianity, really, never was meant to be a "religion". One must "earn the right to be frank". True Christian Faith is a WAY OF LIFE and there is a Secret to attaining that experience -
THE VERY SECRET TO LIFE ITSELF AND IT'S NOT AN IMPOSSIBLE DREAM
- but rather a Life lived out in loving relationships of compassionate service and caring for others, and particularly those less fortunate than ourselves. Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation, discovered that Secret and so was able to see the Deeper Mysteries of Life which India must recapture within a secular society, if it is to retain its Glory. There is nothing more that we Western "Missionaries" want, than to have Indian nationals taking care of our leprosy patients. In one particular town, I pleaded with about six local doctors to help me care for the patients, but to no avail. Yes, it is sad that certain Western nations, individuals, and even various sects within the Church, using the name of "Christianity", have by their behaviour (e.g. the Spanish Inquisition, The Crusades etc.), denied the very principles for which Jesus gave his life. But why should we take out our revenge against Jesus? In centuries long past, Hindu, Buddhist and Muslim leaders went out from India and exercised their influence in lands now under the names of Cambodia, Burma, Indonesia, Thailand, Viet Nam, Malaysia etc.. They were "missionaries" of their day and the message they lived and proclaimed has actually enriched the culture of South East Asia. One final word; some conservative Hindu friends may feel justified in persecuting foreign, expatriate missionaries, but that does not provide excuse for the beating and raping of Indian national missionaries. Let us save ourselves from the type of witch-hunting that was directed towards the Jewish people by the Nazis in the 1930's and '40's, which began as a census, and ended up by the systematic extermination of over 6 million of these unfortunate German citizens. Perhaps I have said enough; but one final question we must ask ourselves is this :- "If a person chooses to accept the ethical principles of Jesus Christ, does he / she become a better person or not"? You must be the judge. At present, following the brutal burning to death of Graham Staines and his two young sons, in Orissa, India, there is a discussion in progress concerning "The Role of Missionaries in India". Graham Staines and his wife, Gladys were deeply involved in operating a leprosy hospital (an "Aided Institution" of The Leprosy Mission) in Mayurganj, Orissa and were the victims of violent, religious extremists. This has raised the question as to why these people - Missionaries - get involved in, of all things, caring for leprosy patients. What motivates these people or what are their motives?. "Hindustan.net" has invited us all to get involved in this forum to discuss the pros and cons of such activities. Is their ministry vital to India and cannot their social work be conducted by nationals and those of other religious persuasion? We are invited to share our own points of view, that such tragedies be avoided in the future.
