One of the first impressions we had on first arriving in India, back in early 1951, was the vastness of India’s population - over 600 million, compared with Australia’s mere 17 million. "FIRST IMPRESSIONS", in fact, is the title of one of the early chapters in our autobiographical book "AN IMPOSSIBLE DREAM" on the Web, into which you may like to dip to see how we coped at a time when India was only just emerging as a free nation after years of foreign domination. While the British Occupation Forces, which ruled India for about 200 years, certainly had their own motives, what they did by establishing the Indian railway system (the fourth largest in the world) was the best contribution that any of the imperialistic powers of the time could have made to any of their colonies. At the time of our arrival, the whole system was 100% dependent on technology from abroad but now, India is one of the world’s leading nations in terms of the manufacture and export of locomotives, coaches, wagons, tracks, signal equipment and technology. And it is not only excellence in railways; India has a AVIATION INDUSTRY SECOND TO NONE .. You may be surprised at just how big India's aviation industry is. Just check out this LIST OF INDIA's COMMERCIAL AIRLINES.

One of the first areas of India which we came to know and love, is the mighty Himalayas where our three sons, Robert (the late), Paul and Bruce, studied at the prestigeous WOODSTOCK SCHOOL,, nestled high up in the Mussoorie "Foothills", at an altitude of 8,000 feet. At the time our sons studied at Woodstock, the faculty and student body was representative of 32 different races and today, throughout the world, Woodstock's former students are bound together in a international fellowship through WOODSTOCK OLD STUDENTS ASSOCIATION (WOSA). We also were impressed by India's splendid range of other schools, colleges and universities of high academic quality which you may view by CLICKING HERE.

The magnificent Himalayan mountain range, which separates India from Central Asia, has massive, awe-inspiring peaks which tower to over 29,000 feet. When we stayed with our children in "The Hills", during their summer vacation, what also impressed us was the strength of the monsoon and, in those days, so much of the precious rainwater soaked into the soil, thanks to the lush undergrowth. This also served to keep up the level of the subterranian water-table, presently falling at an alarming rate. Now, because of the population explosion, many of the hillside catchment areas have been denuded, permitting rainwater to carry with it valuable topsoil which serves to silt up the Indus, Ganges and Brahmaputra Rivers and their tributaries, down on the plains, often causing devastating floods.

Inspite of all these adversities, India is overcoming its problems, thanks to massive water-storage and irrigation schemes, along with the "Green Revolution" which not only has made many parts of India totally self-supporting in foodgrains (mainly rice and wheat) , but also has made export possible. Tea, peanuts, rubber, peppers / spices and sugar-cane also are valuable exports. India’s central area, particularly, the provinces of Bihar and M.P., is one of the world’s major producers of top quality coal, iron-ore, mica, manganese and bauxite. From a time when the British claimed that, because of its climatic conditions, India could not produce its own textiles, India has become the world’s third nation in terms of the production of cotton goods. With Mumbai as its centre, India’s textile industry is second to none and its silk-weaving and carpet manufacturing industries are the envy of many nations.

Although religion plays a significant role in Indian life, with Hindus comprising about 83% of the population, the Indian Constitution is secular, assuring freedom for all sections of society, to practice their faith with tolerance and understanding. India’s ethnic origins go back to the Aryan invasion when lighter skin tribes from areas now called “Europe”, merged with the darker-skinner indigenous Dravidians to help produce the Indian of modern times. Later Muslim and Mongol invasions served to still further enrich the cultural and ethnic diversity of what has become Hamare Pyare Bharat - Our Beloved India - Land of Our Adoption. International Benevolent Services has a special concern for women in India and, more particularly, disadvantaged, illiterate women who often are the victims of male aggression and oppression. One development organisation for which we encourage support is "BHUMIKANYA", based in Ranchi District, Bihar, India, which helps rural women achieve financial independence through participatory community development.
