AIEA HONGWANJI MISSION


Aiea Hongwanji Mission is a Jodo Shinshu Buddhist Temple affliated with the Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii. The Temple is located at 99-186 Puakala Street in Aiea, Hawaii, USA. The goal of the mission is the propagation of Jodo Shinshu (Mahayana - Pure Land tradition) Buddhism in the Aiea area. Aiea Hongwanji was established in 1902, and has been serving the Aiea community for over a century. In 2002, Aiea Hongwanji celebrated it's centennial with education programs, and commeration services.
The Aiea Hongwanji is one of 36 branch temples in the Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii. The State headquarters of the Mission is located at 1727 Pali Highway, in Honolulu.

Major Services are different times of the year. New Year's Day, Goshoki Hoonko (Founder's Memorial Service) - January; Spring Higan Service - March; Hanamatsuri (Buddha Day), Fujinkai Eshinni Day - April; Gotan-E (Founder's Birthday Service) - May; Obon - August; Fall Higan Service - September; Eitaikyo (Sangha Memorial) Service - November; Bodhi Day, Year-End Service - December.

The resident minister is the Reverand Ai Hironaka. Rev. Hironaka was an associate minister at the Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin for 2 years before he was assigned to Aiea. He graduated from Ryukoku University in Kyoto, Japan.

Rev. Hironaka provides the following pastoral and religious services to our members and the general community: Death rites (Bedside, Funeral, memorial services), Wedding ceremony, Home and Business dedication, Infant's initiatory rites, Burial and cemetary services, pastoral care and counseling, Home services.

Aiea Hongwanji's activities include: Sunday Dharma Services and Buddhist education classes, special services in English and Japanese, Judo, Karate, Kumon, Aerobics, Okinawan Sanshin, Karaoke and craft classes.Fujinkai, Kyodan, Junior and Senior Young Buddhist Associations and Dharma School are the main temple organizations. The Aiea Hongwanji Pre-school offers pre-school for 3 and 4 year olds. If you would like more information on the Pre-school, please call (808) 488-0404. The Lotus Adult Day Care Center is located on the grounds of the temple. It provides services for seniors.

TEMPLE SERVICE
Sunday Family Service is at 9:00 a.m., followed by children's Dharma School. Everyone is welcome to attend!

BON DANCE
The annual Bon dance is held on the 4th saturday in August. It is usually the last of the temple dances on Oahu.

HALL RENTAL
The Mission's Hall is available for rental for parties and other events. Reservations for the Hall is taken one year in advance. Seating capacity is 250; tables and chairs included. For more information, please call the Claire Tamamoto at 466-0282.

From Ewa: H-1 freeway; Aiea exit; past first traffic light, turn right on Puakala St (2nd traffic light).
From Honolulu on Moanalua Freeway: Aiea/Stadium Exit; past first traffic signal; turn right on Puakala St.
From Airport on H-1 freeway: Aiea exit; past first traffic signal, turn right on Puakala St.
From Pearlridge toward stadium on Moanalua Road: Past Aiea Heights Road; past Union 76 station on Left; next left on Puakala St.
