There comes a time in our lives when we must make a choice that will affect us for years to come. That time has come for Cecil, the commander of the Red Wings (which is an elite fighting force of the Kingdom of Baron). His king has ordered him to use any means necessary to obtain the 4 elemental crystals, something that troubles him to no end. When he questions the motives of the king, he is hastily discharged from the Red Wings and banished from Baron. Now his choices are limited. The only hope to control the menace he was once a part of is to forget the part of him that still holds on to the dark, and to introduce a new light unto the world.
Of course, in Final Fantasy, things are never as clear as they seem to be at first. The plots of those who would destroy the world always reach much deeper then we expect, and the lives of those we have come to care for are never too far from coming to an end.
"I'm just a Dark Knight with no courage to disobey his Majesty..."
Cecil, The Dark Knight
The former head of Baron's Red Wings. After launching a successful raid upon Mysidia for the Water Crystal, Cecil begins to wonder about the wholesomeness of his trade - a Dark Knight under the King - and questions the ethics of the orders of the Baronian King he serves. Cecil is ousted from his post by the King of Baron himself, suspected of treason by his questioning nature. Although hurt by his demotion, Cecil still serves Baron, going on a mission to deliver a package to the Village Mist. A benevolent soul, besides his standing as a Dark Knight, Cecil always chooses to follow the right path, regardless of orders or incentive.
"That light called me... his son..."
Cecil, The Paladin
Renouncing his almost tainted Dark Sword given to him in order to serve the Baronian King, Cecil's power now literally glows with the skills of the Paladin, obtained from the top of Mt. Ordeals. With the Paladin's power of good behind his sword, Cecil can now fully battle the evil lurking within Baron and also wield some basic to mid-level White Magic, along with the awesome power of his Paladin armor and swords.
"I'm sure his Majesty has his reasons..."
Kain, The Dragoon
Baron's most prominient Dragoon, Kain is Cecil's best friend at the beginning of the tale. However, for some odd reason, Kain wavers back and forth between the side of good and evil, sometimes fighting against Cecil, sometimes aiding him against Golbez's cohorts. His love triangle with Rosa and Cecil, while sometimes putting Cecil and Kain at odds, nevertheless keeps the three closeknit. What side he'll turn to in the end will invariably alter your quest, as Kain's ability to hover midair then strike his foes fiercely makes him both a deadly adversary and a powerful ally.
"You're not the only one who's lost loved ones!"
Rydia, The Caller
Rydia, a young girl from the Village Mist, is one of the few young people able to cast both white and black magic. Rydia's also one of the few Callers left remaining in the world, a proud people that can summon huge monsters to aid them in battle. Her mother, a longstanding Caller of high position within the village, is said to protect the small town with a Mist Dragon, a Call Beast that shares a strong bond with her own lifeforce. Timid by nature, Rydia is scared about the situation involving the loss of her mother and shows great remorse.
"You're not the only one who's lost loved ones!"
Rydia, The Caller
After being lost at sea when Leviathan attacked the ship containing Cecil's party, Rydia was found and taken in by the Call Beasts of the Land of the Summoned Monsters. Here, since age processes are considerably sped up, Rydia matures to a beautiful young woman, much to the surprise to Cecil and the rest of the party. Although her power to cast white magic ihas lessened to the point of nonexistence due to, Rydia's black magic power grows considerably, along with her ability to summon even more Call Beasts.
"I don't need anyone's help in my own affairs!"
Tellah, The Sage
In search of his runaway daughter and her "spoony bard" groom, Tellah searches throughout various kingdoms until he comes across you in a cave. He's a powerful mage, with the innate ability to cast high levels of both white and black magic, a rare trait indeed. However, his old age and short-term memory often causes him to forget his spells. Tellah's temper breaks easily, often causing him to throw himself at anyone who's harmed one he's sworn to protect. Don't underestimate him because of his age; Tellah will prove himself to be a crucial player, right to the end.
"You may be right. I'm just a coward. I don't care. I'm staying here with Anna."
Edward, The Bard
Prince of a far away land, Edward joins the party very early in the game to help conquer the Antlion, after his love Anna is shot down by Baronian archers amid a formidable airship attack on Damcyan Castle. Although he is of noble blood, Edward walks under the guise of a lowly Bard, with skills suited to that task. He may not seem too useful in the long run compared to more offensive characters, but Edward's comical Hide ability can at least protect him from complete harm, even spells. While somewhat weak at heart, Edward's will always wins out in the end.
"You're going to the Village tomorrow? If something should happen..."
Rosa, The White Wizard
Cecil's companion and often romantic interest, Rosa is a specialized White Mage...and quite masterful at it too. Rosa worries constantly about Cecil, whether waiting for him to return after combat or trying to understand his resentment towards the King. The object of both Cecil and Kain's affections at times, the young White Mage, as is inherent of her trade, often tries to comfort the two of their battle woes. When Cecil is cast out of Baron, Rosa follows him out of longing once she hears of his unexpected disappearance in the Village Mist.
"Lure the enemies here, then... Smash 'em!"
Yang, The Karate Master
A prince of the kingdom of Fabul, Yang can be found fighting various undead monsters and Bombs atop Mt. Hobs, which leads to his realm, the kingdom of Fabul. With the majority of Fabul's main forces wiped out by Golbez's minions, Yang, being the only survivor of their frontlines of defense, will need your help to defend Fabul from the oncoming onslaught for the Crystal of Air. He won't need too much help, however; Yang is a hardcore fighting Monk, and his power-packed punches combined with his trademark elemental claws are usually enough to decimate his opponents.
"Grown-ups. They like trouble!"
Palom, The Black Wizard
Porom's brother and Mysidia's fastest rising Black Wizard, Palom also trains under the town elder of Mysidia with his sister. A restless and slightly ill-mannered youth, Palom's almost always up to mischief, requiring Porom to often scold him repeatedly. Palom, however, has a good heart, and is always the first to volunteer to help someone in need, especially if it requires him to show off his growing black magic prowess, which he's greatly proud of.
"Palom! You must greet him!"
Porom, The White Wizard
One of Mysidia's budding White Wizards, Porom and her brother Palom train under the careful eye of the town elder. Fitting her role as a White Mage perfectly, Porom is very calm and refined in both everyday life and the face of danger, always keeping her manners intact. A bright child and the seemingly elder of the two, Porom keeps her hands full by keeping her brother Palom in line, administering an occasional bop on the head if need be. The two remain very close, regardless.
"Now I'll show you the power... of ANGER!"
Edge, The Ninja
Prince of the underground town of Eblan, Edge is a true ninja, and an invaluable asset to your team. While living with his parents, the King and Queen of Eblana, Rubricant, one of Golbez's Four Elementals, led a devestating attacks upon their kingdon slaying many people, including the King and Queen, and sending the survivors to a dark underground refugee. Able to throw objects at extremely high velocity and amass a variety of Ninja techniques, Edge only seeks revenge for the deaths of the parents from Golbez and his minions.
"He ordered me to make an airship, but I don't want it used as a weapon!"
Cid, The Engineer
Another former employee of the Baronian empire, Cid is reowned world-wide for his achievements such as the entire Baronian fleet of airships among other technological breakthroughs. In fact, his inventions have even been compared to the legendary work of dwarves. However, Cid's sense of loyalty is overridden by his sense of good, as he is the one of the first to suspect and have knowledge of the odd behavior of the King of Baron. Cid's resourcefulness in battle along with his kindly, optimistic attitude provide a "never say die" feeling to Cecil's team, even when all seems lost, and he won't hesitate to put it all on the line at any moment.
"The fate of the world lies in you!"
FuSoYa, The Lunarian
A Lunarian possessing phenomenal magical prowess, FuSoYa is one of the few people completely aware of the entire story and plots of Golbez and our heroes. Several hundred years old, FuSoYa lives in a secluded cave on the Moon, safeguarding the crypt of an ancient demon. A devoted protector of the crystals, FuSoYa will stop at nothing to ensure their continued safekeeping and survival from harm or evil. The Lunarian is also one of the very few beings in the universe to master the destructive spell Meteo.
