Sorry for not updating this site in a while but because of the summer season I really never had the time. Stay in touch as new updates are on there way.

Dear SaveGooseBay:
With regards to your e-mail to my attention, I want to thank you for
taking the time to make your thoughts known with respect to this very
important issue. I would like to make it very clear that my Government
recognizes the importance of this base to the area and, indeed, to the
Province. Its future was identified as a priority for Government, and I
agree it requires the attention of all levels of Government.
My officials are formulating a strategy which will form the basis of a
meeting I intend to have early in the new year with the Prime Minister
and the Minister of National Defence. In the meantime, I can advise
you of two (2) other initiatives that will be in place early in the new
year which will bring even greater effort to this file:
* establishing an extension of my office in Happy Valley-Goose Bay,
and as well
* establishing an Intergovernmental Affairs office in Ottawa.
Both of these entities will be working diligently to ensure that
economic activities such as the Department of National Defence's presence in
Labrador are maintained and indeed enhanced.

THERE ARE APPROXIMATELY 7200 PERMANENT CITIZENS LIVING IN GOOSE BAY AND SURROUNDING TOWNS..HAPPY VALLEY, MUD LAKE, NORTH WEST RIVER, SHESHASHIUT, AND OF COURSE GOOSE BAY. ALL THESE COMMUNITIES DEPEND ON THE SUCCESS OF THE BASE IN ONE FORM OR ANOTHER. EITHER DIRECTLY FROM EMPLOYMENT, OR INDIRECTLY FROM PROVIDING GOODS / SUPPLIES OR SERVICES. DON'T ALLOW THIS TO HAPPEN. Here is a issue I recently found out.
- When the USAF pulled out in 1976 they stated they would come back on 20-25 years and re-surface the main two runways @ Goose Bay. This was a good will jester on behalf of the USAF, which unfortunately was smashed as of a couple of months ago. Why?
At this time I am unable to find out any information on the reason why this will not occur. If anyone has any information about this please forward it along to SAVE GOOSE BAY as I will post it to this site.
I also recently received some information(statistics) on the decrease in flight operations on the Goose from 2002-2003. The stats include military personel, What nations were here, sorties performed, etc. I will have this info posted within the next day or so. Keep checking back for more updates.

This caption below was taken from the September 4, 2003 issue of the Globe And Mail.
"Mr. O'Brien, a member of the House defence committee, said he hopes the Americans will return to give the base new life. One possibility is that the United States could use Goose Bay as a radar site for the Pentagon's planned ballistic-missile defence system, Mr. O'Brien said".
The federal government is negotiating possible Canadian participation in missile defence, but the project is controversial.
Here's a little timbit of information taken from www.paulmartintimes.ca.
"The Bush Administration has expressed their intention of pursuing national missile defence, a ground-based system of interceptors designed to address accidential launches or attacks by rougue states. What should Canada's response be"?

The link is minutes from a meeting between Lawrence O'Brien, John McCallum and Gen Raymond R. Henault (Chief of the Defence Staff, Department of National Defence). It is interesting information, so just click on and read.
* With all the information that flows in I cant help but wonder what is actual and what is fictional. I do know from a good source that a committee has been initiated by Colonel Hines(current Base Commander) of local residents to finds different ways that the base can be more viable. To look for more ways to keep the costs down for the Allies, and to find better ways to allow more countries to utilize what Goose Bay has to offe
