In Encounter 4, its difficult to follow who is doing what [C267].
Following is a short summary of likely possibilities:
[1] 40:1-2 Yahweh in person brings Ezekiel back to the site of E3 [= Sinai /Exodus base].
[2] 40:3 Yahweh takes Ezekiel to meet the 'man clothed in linen' of E3.
[3.1] 40:4+ The man speaks to Ezekiel and takes him on tour as he measures the site.
[3.2] Yahweh speaks to Ezekiel and stays during the tour.
[3.3] Yahweh [maybe straight after speaking to Ezekiel] leaves the pair and goes off to command a
craft or await its arrival in the temple.
[4] 43:2+ The craft enters the temple. Ezekiel watches with the 'measuring man' and/or Yahweh at
his side.
[5.1] 43:6-7 Ezekiel is spoken to by a male with him [=either the measurer or Yahweh].
[5.2] Yahweh [who had left earlier] speaks to him out of the temple.
[6] 44:1+ Ezekiel is taken on the last part of the instructive tour by the 'man clothed in linen' and /or
Yahweh.
Br 431 As in E3, [ see 8:16-18, 10:12] -
events centre on a sacred alignment and begin in the evening at the start of the spring or autumn
equinox.
[E540 Cultic New Year = month 1 Nisan March/April]
The emphasis in this Encounter is on measurement.
The 'beings' leave architectural information not implementable until a technological phase such as that
reached this century. [BP 94/5].
40: 1-3...the hand of Yahweh came upon me and he brought me there.
In a vision God brought me to the land of Israel and set me on a very high mountain,
where I saw what seemed the buildings of a city facing me/to the south.
or [E536]...the hand of Yahweh came upon me and brought me there in the vision of God[s]
had brought me into the land of Israel and set me down upon a very high mountain,
on which was a structure like a city opposite me.
B93,107 Ezekiel is brought in 'the Vision[s] of God' either accompanied by 'he'
[or by remote control , but not by a spirit/wind].
He is set down on a very high unnamed mountain.
E541,542 - A plain encircles this mountain and a miraculous river proceeds from it.
Other mountains tower around it. [Presumably, he is back at the Exodus Sinai base [see Taylor]].
Opposite to the south is a towering structure which seems like a city [distance unspecified].
E541 the 'city' turns out to be dominated by a house and castle-like temple [see 43:10-11]
with mighty gateways and successive terraces each rising above the other.
E554, Br435 The whole temple complex faces east [see alignments
and [as in E3]may be outside/separate from /on the edge of the city.
40: 3 He led me towards it and / When he brought me there...
B108 'He' leads him towards the group of buildings to witness the measuring of a complex over 350'
square.
I saw a man like a figure of bronze/glistening like copper
holding a cord of linen thread and a measuring-rod/reed in his hand, and standing at the
gate.
B93-4/109 At an unspecified distance, Ezekiel sees a man waiting in the eastern gateway.
Commentators favour him being the man clothed in linen of Encounter3.
His suit is less bright = less protective/lighter, allowing him to walk significant distances [as in
Encounter3].
Ezekiel can now see he is an actual man [not a form or likeness of] with an actual hand -[not a form
as in 8:3].
A lighter suit also indicates familiarity with rarefied air.
Ezekiel [now 50]doesn't seem to have a problem either.
The same may be true for Yahweh, but its not certain that he walks large distances in any encounter.
The man has 2 measuring implements:
[1] What looks like a flax cord [its length is not given and can't be accurately calculated].
[2] What looks like a 10' 6" measuring reed.
40:4 And the man said to me
"Son of Man, look closely and listen carefully; mark well/ set your mind upon all that I
show you,
for this is why you have been brought here/for I have come here in order that I might show
it to you.
Tell the Israelites all that you see."
B21 The visitors know [through earlier encounters and missionary contacts]that Ezekiel has
total visual/aural recall.
The measurer[presumably, although its usually Yahweh's prerogative to use the phrase 'son of
man' - also see 44:2]
urges him to mindful pay attention to everything shown. All information is to be passed on.
This is social engineering in action, with the aim of maximising humanities' study of geometry.
As in his earlier [and modern!] encounters, Ezekiel cannot/is not allowed to physically record details.
40:5 -42:20 Meticulous measurements are taken of the complex. outside the city.
The complex is deserted [maybe cleansed of bodies by 'radiation' in E3?] E542/549
No particulars as to height of any part of the Temple? itself are given.
E547 The holy of holies is not mentioned [see 41:15-26]
Br431,433,435 The Temple, which is not in the city, is a perfect 500 cubits square [42:15-20]
