an ezekiel study

Deus absconditus in Ezekiel. The extent to which Ezekiel reacts against
the cultic and political institutions of Jerusalem has seldom been fully
appreciated. Note first of all that the Jerusalem acropolis is never
called Zion in the text of Ezekiel.[21] Further, in Ezekiel's final
vision, the mountain of Yhwh's dwelling is deliberately disassociated
from Jerusalem. Not only is the city (described in Ezekiel 48:30-35) not
located on the mountain, so that the Temple is not located within the
city, but the city is not even called "Jerusalem"![22] Far from
reversing the vision of Yhwh's departure in Ezekiel 8--11, this final
vision confirms that earlier insight. Although the ideal city of
Ezekiel's vision is optimistically renamed Yhwh shamma ("Yhwh is there;"
appropriate in light of the promise in 43:7a that Yhwh "will dwell in
the midst of the people Israel forever"), it is clear that Yhwh's
presence is no longer identified unambiguously with the city.[23] The
true Temple, and the true cosmic mountain on which it stands, are no
longer linked to the city. Yhwh doesn't live there anymore.

Zimmerli in particular has observed that the Temple of Ezekiel's final
vision has also been purged of all royal references.
