424th Field Artillery Battalion
The 20th Annual Reunion of the 424th Field Artillery Battalion will be held in September 2009 in the Quad City area along the Mississippi River on the border of Illinois - Iowa. Rock Island, one of the Quad Cities is where the Rock Island Arsenal is located. I am told that this is where many of the 8-inch howitzers were made. This has not been confirmed by me as of this date (11/27/08). More on this later.
The actual days in September have not been set yet. Negotiations are under way for a suitable hotel location. This 20th Reunion will be hosted by Ralph and Marcells Anderson ('A' BATTERY).
The 19th Annual Reunion, held this past October 26-27-28 in Dayton, Ohio was a resounding success. The USAF Museum was the main attraction with the Air Force Band providing entertainment while the "Buffet Among the Planes" was served.
Holiday Inn North was the Battalion's bivouac site for the three days and all reports give the hotel the highest marks for hospitality and accomodations.
For those of you who could not join us during the 424th's 19th Annual Reunion.... you missed a great reunion.
Now is the time to mark your calendar for September 2009 and the 20th 424th Field Artillery Battalion Reunion.
There will be more details on this page as time goes on but feel free to Email us at any time with questions.
The 424th was activated in 1950 and deployed to Korea from 1951 through 1954. The 25th Anniversary Reunion was held in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1975. Since that time there have been 19 Annual Reunions. At each reunion, the veterans choose where the coming reunions will be held. The formal announcement with registration forms and details is usually mailed out in February each year. If you haven't received your registration forms in the past be sure to e-mail or write to us soon so you don't miss out.
The Battalion wants all 424th veterans, their families and friends to join the 20th Reunion next September
The current Battalion Roster includes over 400 men with current addresses and telephone numbers. Sadly, the roster also includes about 1,500 men whom we have been unable to locate. If you know of a 424th member and have his address please send it to us. Don't assume we have the information... we might not! If we do already have it, no problem. WE WANT TO FIND EVERYONE WHO SERVED WITH THE BATTALION.
The Battalion publishes a newsletter, The Howitzer, every Spring, early Summer and late Fall. The subscription requires a minimum donation of $20. A few members donate additional money. If enough is received a "fourth issue" is published. Anyone wishing to be included on the subscription list should e-mail Ed Bicknell (click Ed's e-mail address below). A return e-mail will tell you all about it.
